The collaboration duo of Thighpaulsandra (Coil, UUUU) and Massimo Pupillo (Zu, Triple Sun) form URUK, and their sophomore effort is out on June 22, Mysterium Coniunctionis (Ici d’ailleurs/Mind Travels). Their named derived from ancient Babylonia, and the solemn drone just takes hold from the start on the first of two tracks, Spagyria. The enigmatic atmosphere wreaks of thick the unexpected in a haze of layered synths. This is definitely the kind of record that its almost required to wear a headset to catch the depth of all its creaky cracks and crevices. The record titled is somehow assimilates itself from the work of C.G. Jung. One lengthy track per side, the flotation abounds atop illusory wriggling effects. Behaving like a haunted soundtrack, the empty space is most certainly employing something beguiling behind every bit of twisted, cursory percussion. The tension breaks ever so subtly into an elegant harmonic (fleur-de-lis) pattern, almost formal, but bright – and it too dissipates into an ambiguous ambient space. It’s the aural equivalent to the album art by Francis Meslet with his wide-open empty spaces.
The b-side brings Solve Et Coagula, which brings new meaning to a sense of abandonment, in fact there may even be a field recording of crickets at the front end, alongside cyclical boots to the ground marching. The Welsh enigmatic player and the Italian composer have rolled up their sleeves on this sonic exploration. This is the second record by the pair after 2017’s I Leave A Silver Trail Through Blackness, and it’s a bit of a revelation, and departure for their separate, and otherwise genreless styles. On this track it sounds like a timer has been set, there is a subtle increasing pace implied by the various generated effects. They are getting into your head here, as would Jung. The alternating tones give off a rather smoky, wide, and distinctively atmospheric dynamic range. You’ll be hard pressed not to either engage or give yourself up to this by midway through, it’s hypnotic to the nth extent. It becomes flush with a wall of white noise, layered with a symphonic distant backdrop. This is the countdown, the rev, and the blast-off all in one – and as such provokes at the core language residing between sound, noise + musicality. It might also induce a semi-comatose state of being.
