Shimmer by Gavin Miller

Gavin Miller | Shimmer
Sound in Silence (CD/DL)

Grecian label Sound in Silence has released the latest post-rock ambient work by British musician Gavin Miller (This Is It Forever) titled Shimmer. And it does. They are considering this set of a half-dozen tracks to be a mini LP, and it’s slowness seems to make you feel as though you are fully immersed for the long haul – it’s really one piece subliminally broken into six parts. It’s centered around the reverb guitar, and sumptuous stringed melodies. The tracks are basically titled Part 1 thru Part 6 and they merge into each other so gently. Miller incorporates a very tender approach to blending guitars and keyboard by allowing breathy vocal samples and tendrils of synth to just dance on its surface.

This is a limited edition of 150 handmade and hand-numbered collectible copies. It is packaged in a hand-stamped 127mm x 127mm 260 gsm dark grey cardboard envelope with the front cover image printed on a polaroid style photo paper and an insert sheet containing tracklist and information printed on a 170 gsm off-grey cardboard. It also comes bundled with a download code coupon and a Sound In Silence card.

If you want to reduce the tensions of the everyday slip on Part 4, it just may transform the entire space and any of its occupants into hushed sleepwalkers. Shimmer is quite seductively meditative in its nearly invisible chord structures and shifts thereof. Miller conducts a quiet affair, one that is transfixed within the traditional world of ambient, and harnesses the inner power of the psyche, allowing the body to be at ease. In the final stages here it sounds like a sleepy version of the melancholic guitar echo on the Rolling Stones’ Paint It Black. The pacing is so meticulous and serene. Get lost.
