“Outstanding and far-out experimental exaggeration”
Retrospective box sets are informative think-tanks! Lovely introductions or remembrance collections, bearing the task of showcasing the whereabouts of an artist, in an enlarged manner. Reynols, an Argentinian experimental band, hailing from Buenos Aires, formed in 1993 as Burt Reynols Ensamble. Due to a legal action against them, they changed their name to Reynols in 1996. Thirty albums, a ton of singles, ep’s and collaborations, define the quite productive free jazz, experimental, outfit with Miguel Tomasín, Roberto Conlazo and Anla Courtis. They are far beyond genre tags! Bass guitar, keyboards, trombone, flute, flugelhorn, guitar, piano, trumpet, digital mollejas, organ and percussion are combining, merging, colliding, running, crossing paths, creating the Reynols aura.
Minecxio Emanations 1993-2018 is massive (to say the least), essentially covering all Reynols musical deconstructive course. Far beyond diverse, their sound extends to a vast array of musical approaches: from abstract free rock, lo-fi drone and electronic music, to conceptual sound art and sociopolitical/esoteric themes. Experimental is an umbrella term for them. Besides the huge volume of material contained in this release, almost everything is previously unreleased, making Minecxio Emanations 1993-2018 much more than a retrospective compilation!
In six CDs and one DVD, the avant-garde, pluralistic conceptions of Reynols unfold, divided by era; an exceptional curatorial work. Early recordings, beginning from 1993-1994, originally appeared in small edition cassettes and some others previous unreleased. Two albums from the early 00’s that were completed, but never released. A selection from the Jaz Ronco Japi Javas sessions from 2001-2002, previously available only as very limited CDRs. Conceptual pieces, including performances at the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, NASA in Houston, USA and the Atomium in Brussels, Belgium, outtakes from the 10.000 Chickens Symphony and from public street protests in Buenos Aires, Argentina, during the December 2001 crisis. Collaborations also featured, with artists like Dr. Socolinsky, legendary experimental composer Pauline Oliveros, composer Nelson Gastaldi, rapper, singer and songwriter Jazzy Mel and the psychedelic overlord Makoto Kawabata (Acid Mothers Temple). In addition, a 90 minute DVD with some explosive live performances and extras is included.
Printed matter is always a mandatory addition in huge releases like this. In Minecxio Emanations 1993-2018 two thick booklets do the job adequately. The first one focuses on writings about Reynols. Contains their story in a 3000 word piece by Marc Masters, a rich text based on new interviews with Anla Courtis, Roberto Conlazo and Miguel Tomasín. Shorter texts by Lasse Marhaug, Oren Ambarchi, Sindre Bjerga, Sixto Fernando, Sigtryggur Berg Sigmarsson, C. Spencer Yeh, John Olson and others are also included. The second one is visually oriented, containing photos, artwork, press clippings, quotes, flyers and posters, with most of this material never seen before.
Fifty-two pieces of outstanding and far-out experimental exaggeration, packed with gems not to be missed. Housed in a beautiful cardboard box. More than enough, from a band that you cannot have enough. Easily a landmark release. Very well done Pica Disk!
