Ambient Double Take

Olan Mill | Sounds of a New Father Shimmering Moods Records (CS/DL) Orphax | Dream Sequence #5 Non-Harmonic Multitones (3″ CD-R/DL) Two recent releases of drifting ambient here. Orphax presents the fifth installment of his “Dream Sequence” series, and it’s a meditative piece that ripples and washes by.  The composition was inspired by taking a train to his hometown and watching the landscape pass by, blurring into colours and lines.  The train journey lasts 18 minutes and 6 seconds, as does the track, and I like to imagine as the listener follows the progress of the piece, we’re taking the … Continue reading Ambient Double Take

We Can Never Go Home by Styrofoam

Styrofoam | We Can Never Go Home Sound In Silence (CDR/DL) Out on Grecian label Sound In Silence is the latest from Belgian electronic artist Styrofoam (Arne Van Petegem), his first release in eight years, We Can Never Go Home.  These eight new tracks kickstart with the softened videogame vibes of Fully Present. It’s a multicolored world allowing in some crunchy half beats to balance the drippy synths. Van Petegem uses bright tones in a style similar to some latter day Tangerine Dream. It Isn’t Real So It Doesn’t Count has got this allure that straddles retro 80s commercial electronica … Continue reading We Can Never Go Home by Styrofoam

Organes de la Voix by MSMiroslaw

MSMiroslaw | Organes de la Voix Trasponsonic (CDR) Subtitled Chants Funèbres pour AHYHW this was recorded inside a nuraghe (a megalithic megalithic edifice found in Sardinia) using only voice (or in this case, organs for the voice). The indulgent echoes fill the space in this definitively ritualistic-style dark ambient record filled with reverb, smoke and mirrors. I’m guesstimating that this is Sardinian sound artist MSMiroslaw‘s third recording since about 2014, one of which was a collaboration. This uses a phonetic system to produce a sense of polyphonics. As an EP Organes de la Voix flows from track to track rather effortlessly … Continue reading Organes de la Voix by MSMiroslaw

Humyth by Giacomo Salis x Paolo Sanna

From the Collectors Series of Confront Recordings comes Humyth by Sardinian experimental composers Giacomo Salis + Paolo Sanna (CDR) – dedicated to Steve Reid. Five untitled, improvised tracks begin with jangling clicks and other small disturbances. The dueling percussionists work off each other to develop chiseling sounds that imitate tropical birds mating and industrial mishegas. Atonal to a fault it’s a salty mix of musicians caught in-the-moment, putting the ‘P’ in playing. At one point towards the end of the first track a radio signal emits a welcome layer of static. Then once track two starts to open up, a … Continue reading Humyth by Giacomo Salis x Paolo Sanna
