Elnath Project | ~ Focused Silence (CD/DL) “Music cannot exist without sound.
Sound exists by itself without music.
 Music evolves over time.
 The sound is timeless.
 It’s the sound that matters.
Sound is strength.” – Giacinto Scelsi Elnath Project consists of trumpeter Alessandro Ciccarelli and his new record simply titled by the tilde symbol is a rare bird of sorts. On ~ he was inspired by the work of fellow Italian and surrealist-era composer Giacinto Scelsi (1905-1988). From the very top of DA22~ we are drawn into a foggy, drone saturated world that buzzes with an evaporating reverb. An all … Continue reading ~ by Elnath Project

The 5th Apple by Alina Kalancea

Alina Kalancea | The 5th Apple Störung (2LP/CD) My first impression of Romanian sound artist Alina Kalancea is a double-take. Partly because every image of her visage on the web is partly obscured, even her own site appearing somewhat faceless – but most of all because her sound is more like the essence of perfume than anything else. Though she’s been at it for years this is her debut album. The eight pieces (an additional hour plus work is available in the full set) presented on The 5th Apple are atomized like fine molecules bursting in mid air. It runs … Continue reading The 5th Apple by Alina Kalancea

Vowel by Jeton Hoxha

Jeton Hoxha | Vowel Eighth Tower Records (DL) Jeton Hoxha is a welcome newcomer in the world of drone and all that is darkly mysterious. The Macedonian artist’s forty-five minute singular work is coated from end to end with a shmeared landscape of reverb and resonance, mastered by the hard working label runner, Sonologyst. It’s layered with a thick sonic wall, but intermittently a melodic chord rises and pierces through the thick foggy surface. This falls (or rather floats) between ambient and the dark side thereof – but seems to drift into its own soundfield. Think of an epic wind … Continue reading Vowel by Jeton Hoxha

Kundalini by VelgeNaturlig

VelgeNaturlig | Kundalini Winter-Light (CD/DL) We ease into the drifting drone of Portugese sound artist VelgeNaturlig (Ivo Santos) as he releases Kundalini on Dutch imprint Winter-Light. Blurring the lines of mystics and surveyors the setting is a many layered set of grey tones and soft bass harmonies on Padmasana. The air is ever-shifting, yet dense like an ominous fog. The dozen tracks here merge without pause into one another. What sounds like gongs or bowls are scraped ever-so-gently to form a cyclical passage of sound where wind rustles through the trees and from left to right channels. It’s so subtle … Continue reading Kundalini by VelgeNaturlig

Il Museo Selvatico by Massimo Toniutti

Massimo Toniutti | Il Museo Selvatico Black Truffle (2xLP comes w/DL) Italian experimental sound designer, Massimo Toniutti, released this little known haunting, underground gem twenty seven years ago and Black Truffle was kind enough to unearth this collection of seven interesting tracks in a lavish double vinyl set in a gatefold printed inner sleeve. Il Museo Selvatico which translates to ‘the wild museum’ is likely referencing Mother Nature herself. Toniutti began recording via cassette only in 1984 and have released seven full length records up until 2016. “Existing in a private world apart from the noise and dark industrial tropes … Continue reading Il Museo Selvatico by Massimo Toniutti

Codex by Atrium Carceri

Atrium Carceri | Codex Cryo Chamber (LP/CD/DL) This is a perfect record for a rainy morning. Swedish dark ambient artist Atrium Carceri (Simon Heath) has been working on Codex for three years, and this is my introduction to his work. Quite prolific as this is his thirteenth solo recording since 2003, with several collaborations in and between. The Void stars off right away as a moody, melodic work, filled with strange fog and circumstance. This floats like a broken lava bed right into From Chasms Reborn. Here a striated, gravelly sound pairs well with a soft drone and intermittent floating … Continue reading Codex by Atrium Carceri

The Right Side of Mystery by Nathan Moody

Nathan Moody | The Right Side of Mystery Noisejockey (2xCS/DL) In what looks like a neat lil’ limited edition package (8 remain at presstime) Nathan Moody unveils his latest, a twenty-one track double tape set titled The Right Side of Mystery. Let’s jump into the first of four sides via The Namegiver. A dark strum greets us at the doors of this self-described “post-apocalyptic Appalachian doom.” Not having yet traveled to this part of the country, I’ll take his word for it as the folk jangle seems slightly territorial, into the ominous gong on Bring the Lantern Down. My ears are … Continue reading The Right Side of Mystery by Nathan Moody
