Toneshift presents Top Three of 2018

THE TONESHIFT TOP THREE: Though we managed to crank out more than four-hundred reviews in 2018, there were certain releases that broke the highest of expectations, or came in from left field here at Toneshift headquarters. Instead of another boring Top 10 list we decided to be extremely shrewd in our curation and pare down to those rare records that hit us in that sweet spot between the ears. All of our contributors, including our newest member, have offered their very Top Three choice recordings of 2018, and it turns out to be a truly diverse selection of unexpected earcandy. … Continue reading Toneshift presents Top Three of 2018

November Wrap-Up

For the last three months we have truly been inundated with diverse new releases, and because of volume and curation many of them miss hitting the pixels we produce here at Toneshift.net. We are so lucky to be able to have access to such a wide breadth of innovative sounds. Out of these numerous works I have decided there are a small batch that I cannot just allow to pass into the ether. So I am taking on those holdouts here in a series of quickie session of shotgun reviews (don’t let my brevity dissuade you from listening longingly), consider … Continue reading November Wrap-Up

Tropical Gothic by Mike Cooper

Mike Cooper | Tropical Gothic Discrepant (LP/DL) The septuagenarian artist only shows vital signs on Tropical Gothic. On these nine tracks, eight short works on side one, and a singular lengthy work on the flipside we begin to hear jungle vibes on The Pit, an abbreviated overture running less than a minute. The setting becomes mysterious, driven by intrigue as A Mask of Flesh begins to reveal itself. With slight twang and nefarious rumbling this fluidly rolls into By The River. It’s percussive, elusive, and a bit of a staring-down-the-barrel setting. Each of these vignettes has its very own character, … Continue reading Tropical Gothic by Mike Cooper

Adzer by Bardo Todol x M.M. Peres x Úgjü Sectas

Bardo Todol + M.M. Peres + Úgjü Sectas Adzer (Sucata Tapes; CS/DL) Don’t let the crazy cover fool you, this is not Nat Geo – this is a three-way split tape of Argentinian goodness, packed with flavor. Adzer presents two tracks each by Bardo Todol, M.M. Peres and Úgjü Sectas. The cassette runs in an edition of 150 and is expected out this Friday on Sucata Tapes, a sub-label of Discrepant. Bardol Tool: In what can only be described as a field recording from the middle of a cow pasture, this layered set of sounds combined moos, barks, running water, … Continue reading Adzer by Bardo Todol x M.M. Only Now & Orogen

A self-titled debut filled with the manipulated field recordings of San Francisco artists Only Now & Orogen (Kush Arora and Lucas Patzek) is now out on Discrepant/Sucata Tapes (Cassette and Digital formats). These guys admit they’ve been inspired by Zoviet France, Brume, Lustmord, Alio Die, and Hafler Trio. Since I’ve worked with, or reviewed these noted veteran sound benders at some point or other, with CPU revved and ready (theirs and mine), and with open ears, let’s go. BEYOND THE SURFACE: This tape consists of two lengthy tracks, Unearth I and Unearth II, both recorded in 2017 in the Bay … Continue reading Only Now & Orogen

Make Mine, Macaw by Monopoly Child Star Searchers

Out at the end of the month on Discrepant is the latest by Monopoly Child Star Searchers (Spencer Clark), the record (LP, Digital) is Make Mine, Macaw. Transfixed in a tropical world where the other side of the world always hold fascination, this is where you’ll land. From the 70’s inspired coverart to the wavy distorted electronics the nu-world album gets deep into a tribal vibe that’s wrought with upbeat rhythm. In only five tracks Clark manages to take us on a gamelan-infused trip in a Tangerine Taxi, with a sidekick, Frawn Perched Macaw. In the latter there are subtle … Continue reading Make Mine, Macaw by Monopoly Child Star Searchers

Stridulations by Pali Meursault

Stridulations (LP, Digital) is released tomorrow from French sound artist Pali Meursault on UK’s Discrepant label. The composer has been recording since 2002, though this is my introduction to his work. With one track per side the musique concrète rattle and tick of pour chaque solution il y as un probleme kicks things off. This collection of manipulated field recordings are layered by cicadas and electronics equally, not to mention the sweeping micro static that swirls throughout. If you can remember the scene in the classic 80’s cult flick Liquid Sky when the lead character eliminates her lovers you may … Continue reading Stridulations by Pali Meursault
