Verbal Brainwash and Other Works by Åke Hodell

Åke Hodell | Verbal Brainwash and Other Works Fylkingen Records (3xCD/DL) Åke Björnsson Hodell (1919-2000) was a Swedish poet, author, text-sound composer, and visual artist. He was also trained as fighter pilot, but after a crash during a practice flight (1941) and few years of hospitalization, he became a dedicated anti-militarist; something very apparent in his work, especially his earlier pieces. He began experimenting with what he called “elektronismer” (later “text-sound composition”), a blend of sound collage, spoken word, recorded radio plays and musique concrete, based on narratives and their electronic editing/process. His collaboration with the music department of Sveriges Radio … Continue reading Verbal Brainwash and Other Works by Åke Hodell

Sensory Dub Example by Co La

Co La | Sensory Dub Example Orange Milk Records (12″/DL) Two years in the making, and worth every second here is Sensory Dub Example from Co La (Matt Papich) with his first long-form single-sided 20 minute piece – donning a rad Yves Tanguyesque cover by Keith Rankin who has designed many an interesting release. He’s put out a handful of records (tapes, et al) since 2011, but has kept a bit of a low profile – though should get people out of their smartphone stare. The synths, the structure, has an Asian influence, and will appeal to fans of sparse … Continue reading Sensory Dub Example by Co La

Open Colour by Blanket Swimming

Blanket Swimming Open Colour (Histamine Tapes; CS/DL) Mississippi sound project Blanket Swimming (Nick M.) has just put out their second release on this limited edition cassette (ed of 30) on Vermont’s slow-growing Histamine Tapes. It’s a dusty buzz Western guitar drone, layered with a slow-roasted harmony. Each track, Open Colour pts. 1-5 build on each other nicely in the chasm ‘tween shoegaze and industrial collapse. The is one of those ambient/noise records that often slips through the cracks because of its limited release, and even though this is on the darker side of the spectrum, don’t let it lose the … Continue reading Open Colour by Blanket Swimming

Luna by Doon Kanda

In his second EP on Hyperdub Records here is Doon Kanda (aka Jesse Kanda) with the low-brow soft beats of Luna. In seven short tracks this release is subtly groovy and laidback as heard on the bright and intentionally old school synth sounding title track. It’s fueled by comic simplicity, and hidden Jamaican themes woven tightly. At times it feels like a redacted Squarepusher using a Speak & Spell, and depending on how you glance there may be intriguing anomalous tones that are decoding alien voices, attempting communication (i.e. Crinoline).  Hey, the toy was used as a speech synthesizer, I’m … Continue reading Luna by Doon Kanda
