Sterminato Piano by Fabio Orsi

Fabio Orsi | Sterminato Piano Backwards (LP) Italian imprint Backwards is just releasing the latest from Berlin-based Fabio Orsi in a limited vinyl edition on bright orange wax. This is noteable, not just because of the Miami vibes coming off of the sumptious cover art, but moreso due to the unusual change in overall tonal values for the artist usually cloaked and shrouded in otherwise atmospheric obscured gray layers. Here he showcases an entire 360°. In just two tracks, each under 20 minutes, the artist I’ve known from previous efforts like Osci (2006, SmallVoices) or Stand Before Me, Oh My … Continue reading Sterminato Piano by Fabio Orsi

Be On Fire by Chrome Sparks

Chrome Sparks | Be On Fire Counter Records (DL/Stream) The new EP from Brooklyn’s Chrome Sparks (Jeremy Malvin) nicely crosses genres with ease, there are hints of abstraction, awkward beats, minimal techno, hip-hop with samples and effects galore. It’s a true pastiche of style that has ‘essence eau hipster’ written all over it – saturated in this rainbow blend of throwback soundtrack themes, fuzzy funk and slunken beats. In fact the mistaken identity of genre occurs near the start on In2 Your Love where a restrained pop soul vocal is muted over a trippy synth and fuzzbox, but at just … Continue reading Be On Fire by Chrome Sparks

Το παρελθόν περιέχει το μέλλον by Thee Koukouvaya

Thee Koukouvaya | Tο παρελθόν περιέχει το μέλλον Somewherecold Records (CD/DL) Thee Koukouvaya is a duo made up of John O’Hara and Brian Wenckebach, and it’s all Greek to me on Somewherecold. The album title translates to “the past contains the future” – so here’s hoping this will be a spacey trip. The cover, alone, gives us some vague example of what to expect, something likely abstract with gilded inflections of ye olde unexpected. There are a dozen tracks to get to so let’s move this forth, shall we? Heat Up the Death Ray opens with glints of tonal brightness. … Continue reading Το παρελθόν περιέχει το μέλλον by Thee Koukouvaya

Container by Shoeg

Shoeg | Container Orange Milk Records (CS/DL) Barcelona-based artist Shoeg (Carlos Martorell) has recently released Container through Orange Milk Records. The tape is broken into two lengthy tracks, or sides – Movement 1-17 and Movement 18-25 respectively. At first its glitchy, rounded with tactile electronic signals that slowly pour outward and meander like a lost machine trapsing through the retro debris of 70’s progressive electronica. The whole vibe has a bit of a tilt factor. It’s curious, fun/ny and bright/bold. There are underpinnings of gaming sounds, but it is a fluid affair, nothing like a strait sample, just an impression. … Continue reading Container by Shoeg

Noize Mélodia by Vromb

Vromb | Noize Mélodia Ant-Zen (CD/DL) On his 10th solo record French Canadian electronic artist Vromb (aka Hugo Girard), delivers his sixth full-length with German imprint Ant-Zen. Here we have a dozen new compositions (compartmentalized to nine on the digital version), made with modular equipment, without presets or adjustments. The atmosphere is intense from the outset with a churning drone and incidental electrodes, and other sound effects. Réglages et radiations is a gentle wash of synths, the mystery of mechanization. There are up to four variations of vélectrobass on Noize Mélodia, and first up is vélectrobass (origine) with its pulse … Continue reading Noize Mélodia by Vromb

Thomas Bey William Bailey | la production interdite Elevator Bath (CS/DL) My Austin neighbors (down the road a piece from muddy Ft. Worth), Elevator Bath, have released the latest from psycho-acoustic sound artist, Thomas Bey William Bailey, with his new limited edition tape (only 50!) –  la production interdite. Consisting of one self-titled half hour long track per side, they have distinct variations as I flip through. Bailey accomplishes this by wielding “a full complement of analog and digital tools, including the famous Buchla … Continue reading la production interdite by Thomas Bey William Bailey
