Kreise by Selm

Selm | Kreise Opal Tapes (2xCS/DL) The Brothers Giets as Selm unveil their latest outpouring of jilted electronics via Opal Tapes upon the morrow. Kreise is a double tape set that opens with the pulse of Blood running through its compass. It’s bent in all the right ways – with a honed minimalism and bleak structure here, like a motor that is making umpteen attempts to turn itself on. The coursing continues in the apprehensive industrialism of Sand, with glorious pause and echo. The cadence shifts ever-so-slightly, the hollow deepens. If you enjoy sounds caught in the crosshairs of broken … Continue reading Kreise by Selm

Heavy The Eclipse by Clouds

Clouds | Heavy The EclipseElectric Deluxe (3xLP/DL) The Electric Deluxe label, run by Speedy J, has been on fire lately.  It released one of my favourite techno records of 2018, the slow-burning assault by JK Flesh.  This grinding, idiosyncratic take on dance floor music is evident on this new album by Scottish duo Clouds, who return to the label. Heavy The Eclipse is a collection that spans a wide range of styles, incorporating breakbeats, jungle riffs, abstracted techno and a healthy amount of sample mangling.  It’s a really manic approach, and the variety pays of on the album format.  Maximal … Continue reading Heavy The Eclipse by Clouds

Sterminato Piano by Fabio Orsi

Fabio Orsi | Sterminato Piano Backwards (LP) Italian imprint Backwards is just releasing the latest from Berlin-based Fabio Orsi in a limited vinyl edition on bright orange wax. This is noteable, not just because of the Miami vibes coming off of the sumptious cover art, but moreso due to the unusual change in overall tonal values for the artist usually cloaked and shrouded in otherwise atmospheric obscured gray layers. Here he showcases an entire 360°. In just two tracks, each under 20 minutes, the artist I’ve known from previous efforts like Osci (2006, SmallVoices) or Stand Before Me, Oh My … Continue reading Sterminato Piano by Fabio Orsi

Be On Fire by Chrome Sparks

Chrome Sparks | Be On Fire Counter Records (DL/Stream) The new EP from Brooklyn’s Chrome Sparks (Jeremy Malvin) nicely crosses genres with ease, there are hints of abstraction, awkward beats, minimal techno, hip-hop with samples and effects galore. It’s a true pastiche of style that has ‘essence eau hipster’ written all over it – saturated in this rainbow blend of throwback soundtrack themes, fuzzy funk and slunken beats. In fact the mistaken identity of genre occurs near the start on In2 Your Love where a restrained pop soul vocal is muted over a trippy synth and fuzzbox, but at just … Continue reading Be On Fire by Chrome Sparks

Basalt by Carsten Boer/Precocious Mouse

Carsten Boer/Precocious Mouse | Basalt threadneedle community (DL) DIG THIS!: Basalt is a split record by Precocious Mouse and Carsten Boer, each contributing two live session tracks of differing experimental and glitchtech styles. There is a physical release associated for the first twenty who purchase the digital file via Bandcamp. Though the recording is sequenced intermittently between artists I am going to listen to each artist’s tracks separately. Starting with the lead track by Precocious Mouse (Caleb Wood), Root opens as if we are situated deep inside the annals of a cave, the bass low reverb, almost tribal. This percussive effect … Continue reading Basalt by Carsten Boer/Precocious Mouse

Chronicles by The 7th Plain

The 7th Plain (Luke Slater) | Chronicles I-III A-TON (LP/CD//DL) Luke Slater (here as The 7th Plain) is a household name to most rave/techno devotees of the 90’s into the present. Chronicles is an epic project, perhaps Slater’s cosmic alt persona focused on more emotionally charged work as “a response to those hallucinatory, spiritual, but still social spaces at the heart of underground communities.” And this is a long-player, for sure — as it spans three 2xLP volumes with hours of new sounds. These are available individually or as a set, though there is something unique within each set that … Continue reading Chronicles by The 7th Plain

Shared Meanings by Mumdance

Mumdance | Shared Meanings Shared Meanings (12″/CS/DL) Curated and compiled by Jack Adams under his Mumdance alias, Shared Meanings is an expansive project taking in a mixed and non-mixed version, a 12” of selected tracks and even a limited edition cassette for the tape collectors out there. The 32 track mix covers a lot of ground, tying many disparate areas of contemporary electronic music together seamlessly. Every track is previously unreleased, often specially requested by Adams of each artist, so this selection is both fresh and unique. A dedicated website promoting the project even goes as far as breaking down … Continue reading Shared Meanings by Mumdance
