Acezantez

Acezantez | Acezantez Sub Rosa (LP) Originally released in 1977, this self-titled re-issue is my personal introduction to Ansambl Centra za nove tendencije Zagreb, or Acezantez for short – likely for many of you as well! Croatian composer and instrumentalist Dubravko Detoni (b. 1937) is again seeing the light of day forty-one years after it’s original issue (notably by British imprint Paradigm Discs in 2000). The record brings together an ensemble of five players wielding wind instruments (including voice), piano, strings and even the Glockenspiel. The arrangements are broken into two compositions that run at about twenty minutes each, one … Continue reading Acezantez

Cuspo by Síria

Síria | Cuspo Crónica (CS/DL) The collective Portugese label Crónica has been bringing cutting edge, genre defying music since 2003 – and no signs of stopping here. This is Síria‘s debut (aka Diana Combo) and its an assortment of collaborations – field recordings, voice and vinyl records. At first, on Por Riba,  (partly recorded by John Grzinich) it’s quite a soothing, almost meditative blend of silky song and lightly vibrating drone electronics, with some subtle percussion. The setting is spare and dreamy, though it seems like we are in daylight in this adaptation from a recording of Catarina Chitas by Michel Giacometti. … Continue reading Cuspo by Síria

Chapel In The Pines by Eugene S. Robinson & Philippe Petit

Eugene S. Robinson & Philippe Petit | Chapel In The Pines Lumberton Trading Company (CD/DL) Chapel In The Pines is the third album that Eugene S. Robinson & Philippe Petit have collaborated on as a duo in the past seven years, this one appears on Krakow-based imprint Lumberton Trading Company (via Fourth Dimension Records). The five tracks come housed in a digipak wth art designed by Amen. Religion, in a general sense, doesn’t play into electronic music too often, but when it does, like here, it can have a resounding impact. On Augur, the jangling guitar and effects (John 3:16; Petit), … Continue reading Chapel In The Pines by Eugene S. Robinson & Philippe Petit

Two Words by Francis Plagne x crys cole

Francis Plagne & crys cole Two Words (Black Truffle; LP) This debut 33 + a third runs at just about 33 minutes, featuring the duo of Australian songwriter Francis Plagne and Canadian sound artist crys cole. There are no ‘songs’ here. The single track, Two Words, is broken over two sides and at first is the barebones of open ocean waves, or is it static? The im/plausibility either/or creates an initial infectious tension. A high frequency, low output tone enters and fades. And the quirky coverart (courtesy of painter Anne Wallace) gives us no further in, only leading us to … Continue reading Two Words by Francis Plagne x crys cole

Voice and Sky by Jason Kahn

Today I’m looking at the latest book/cd project by Jason Kahn, all the way from Switzerland. Here is Voice and Sky on Kahn’s Editions label. The 70pp book (5.5″ x 6″) includes color images of the artist’s installation, and on location, as well as short stylized prose set like concrete poetry. The disc includes 27 tracks with a 67 minute running time, consisting of taped field recordings and intriguing voice contortions, all created by Kahn. Each track is named for the in-situ location in which it was made. At times the voice seems to awkwardly mimic the action, gasping for … Continue reading Voice and Sky by Jason Kahn
